Malbork Castle
Another fabulous weekend trip accomplished! Katie, Anna, and I all bravely boarded the PKP polish train, and took off to the North. Our goal for the weekend was to visit Gdansk. We did see Gdansk, but it involved lots of people, rain, and shopping, which didn't make for fabulous pictures. Malbork, the town where we stayed, was another story!!!
In addition to the amazing Gothic architecture, frescos, medieval kitchens, and amber displays that we saw, there were amazing gardens around the ramparts of the castle (pictures above). I admit, I desperately wished I'd been wandering around in a medieval kirtle to make the entire visit complete.
Malbork was built in the 1200's, and was the stronghold for the Teutonic knight order. The Teutonic Knight order was a religous, and slightly fanatical order that was the major military and political power of medieval Poland. Pictured above is a Teutonic Knight teaching a young Pole how to strike money. It took him a few tries, but the one-sided button-sized coin looked like the ones we saw in the museum.

"Slightly" fanatical doesn't even begin to cover it :)
Also, that boy in the pictures was the cutest thing ever, he had to whack at that coin for a good 5 minutes before it made any dents ... but he was very proud afterwards.
