Taniec Vampirow
...aka, The Dance of the Vampires.
I went to see this fun broadway-type musical at the Teatr Roma this week in Warsaw. The singing/speaking was all in Polish, but I still managed to get most of it. The play is an adaptation of a Roman Polanski (The Piano, Oliver Twist) 1960's movie called "The Fearless Vampire Hunters." The musical was apparently an apalling flop on broadway in 2000, but it has had better success in Europe.
The music was interesting, and most of it was not an original score. Things I recognised included Heart, a Meatloaf song, and "Total Eclipse of the Heart." Since it was in Polish, I really couldn't tell if the songs were merely translated or if they'd had new words. I think "forever's gonna start tonight" would be perfect for a Vampire musical, so I'm betting the songs were just translated.
I had two favorite scenes: In one, the main female character is singing about how odd the count's castle is. In the background, there appear to be many portraits hanging on the castle wall of past ancestors. The portraits were actually costumed actors posing, and they would shift positions, reaching out to grab her while she sang. It was really well done.
The other favorite scene was where the vampires rise up from the grave to go to the Vampire ball. The costumes were from various eras, and they were all decaying. There was an Elizabethan drumwheel hoop, a 1770's panier, a bustle, knight in armor, and many other great outfits. Check out this amazing picture (it's from the play's website):The best part was we had amazing center front seats for about $25. The actors frequently come out into the audience during the production, and they would walk right by our seats (we were only 2 rows back). I got great views of the costumes!

Wow...sounds like a very strange but fun play...I'm glad it had so many interesting costumes for you! I can imagine some impressive Halloween costumes coming out of this experience...
Hey! That girl has a ship in her hair!
That's awesome!
I want a ship in my hair! Do you think when I go to Hair Cuttery this weekend they could hook me up with one of those numbers? I bet that's extra though... if they included that as part of the $14 haircut they'd go out of business for sure.
I know you're going to love to hear this, but you sound exactly like my mom. There's something about being a historical costumer that makes you go to plays and etc and no matter how weird/strange/bad they are, you can still appreciate the costumes.
Also, I JUST NOW noticed the Dave-countdown on your site ... which is possibly the cutest thing I've ever seen ;)
Where did you get the code for that?
Wow... you just noticed that?
Let's see, it's been there ever since there were like 74 days remaining... as of now there are 34 days remaining... mental math mental math: Whoa! It took you over a month to notice it!
As for where I found the code: What, you don't think my HTML skills are that impressive?
Well you'd be right. I'll send you the link later; I don't have it with me right now. Even with the countdown code it's mildly complex to implement, but the site gives you step by step instructions.
Truthfully, the thing that gave me the most pause was the fact that it's a Javascript and you have to find somewhere to host the script.
It was rather sad how long it took me to remember that I've got free online space with my Comcast account.
So I'm not the most observant girl, but I'm still a good friend, right {batts eyes innocently}??
Anna, is indeed, the best of friends!!! (don't worry, took me a couple of weeks to notice as well)
